ABC(DE)s of Relationships--Part II: Mutual and Cyclic Growth

C-continuation is the working stage of building relationships and friendships. It is a time of developing commitment and trust. These are big words with many complex layers involved in the recognition that the “we” matters more than the “I.”

This is the stage when individuals involved make decisions about priorities and pro-relationship decisions. Mutual and cyclic growth is necessary in all relationships, not just romantic and intimate ones. This is the point when people on opposite extremes make decisions about whether their differences are more important than the relationship. People with diametrically opposed points of view and temperaments can find common ground that allows mutual growth, especially when those decisions promote the feeling that one is getting as much from the relationship as one is giving to it.
